SAMPLE EXPERIMENT: BESTIE MARBLE MAZE TEST
Level of Difficulty: Hard // From Beginning to End: 90 Minutes // Categories: Engineering, Science, Art
1. Use the paper and pencil to sketch out the design of your marble maze. Be sure to have a beginning and end.
2. Construct the maze on your base using your chosen building materials. Either cut and tape down the straws or roll and press down clay to form your marble maze layout. Make sure the path is wide enough for your marble to roll freely. Do test runs using the marble as you build your maze. Make adjustments as you go along.
3. Tape three pencils together to create a tripod tower. Do this again three more times until you have four towers: one for each corner of the marble run base. These towers will be used to guide the marble through the maze.
4. Attach one binder clip to the top of each tripod tower with the loop of the clip pointing up. Add tape to add make sure the binder clip does not move or come off.
5. Place each tower about 2 inches (5 cm) diagonally from the four corners of the marble maze base. Tape the tower to the surface it is standing on to add stability.
6. Cut four pieces of string, each about 16 inches (≈41 cm) in length. Attach one string to each corner of the marble run base. Run the other end of the string through the loop of the binder clip. Tie the loose end of the string to another binder clip so that it hangs about halfway down.
7. Test out your marble maze with a partner. Each person will hold one hanging binder clip in each hand and slowly pull to tilt the base and direct the marble through the maze.
